The Vicious Cycle of Procrastination
Imagine you tell yourself "today after work, I'm going to start working on my new business! (or to going the gym, or learning an instrument or whatever it is for you).
You're excited and motivated all day at work. You've amped yourself up, "I'm going to change my life!" you tell yourself.
You get home and just before you start, you think "I need a few minutes to relax". You open up your phone to and see an interesting Youtube video (you deserve it! you've had a long day at work).
It seems harmless. But the first video turns to another, and then another... and before you know it, it's been 45 minutes and you're still on the couch.
You haven't started... again.
But this is where it gets worse. Because it's not only that you haven't started, but you feel GUILTY that haven't started. You tell yourself:
"I can't believe I'm doing this again. I'm better than this! UGH. I know I want more for my life but I guess I'll just give in tonight..."
The worst part is how you feel about yourself. It makes you feel small and powerless, giving up your goals and ambitions to this stupid little device.
So how do you deal with this negative emotion?
You watch some more videos to numb the pain. To quiet that little voice inside your head. It's easier to watch a few more videos than it would be to take action.
The longer you put off working towards that goal - the harder it is to start. You feel more guilt as the days go on. The worse you feel - the more you procrastinate.
The voice in the back of your head gets louder, and the guilt gets more painful. How long can you put off what's important in your life? How long are you going to wait to make that change?

Public Enemy Number One: Distraction
The most obvious way procrastination manifests is through distraction. However, distraction can wear many masks.

Escapism is generally what we think of when we talk about distraction. It's the mindless distraction that's just plain toxic - and we know it is.
Here are some examples of what I mean by escapism:
These forms of distraction aren't fooling us - we see them for what they are. However, there is a type of distraction that's even more deadly...
Edu-scapism is the form of distraction that wears a dark cloak and peers at us from the shadows, where it can see us, but we can't see it.
It's anything distracting that we THINK is helping us progress in life. Even though these things seem productive, they're often just another form of procrastination.
Let's look at some common examples:
It's not the content that's the problem. It's perfectly fine to watch an interview from Warren Buffet, or listen to Gary Vee give you the "keys to success"...
The problem is when "learning" becomes an excuse for not taking action towards the things we're putting off.
The reality is, you have all the information you need to start. Seriously, how many business videos have you watched? How many fitness videos? How many tutorials related to your craft?
Have they gotten you anywhere? Or are these things just are another form of procrastination holding you back from your goals?
Public Enemy #2: Overstimulation
The reality of life in 2021 is that we're constantly being stimulated by technology.
Millions of dollars are being spent to discover the best ways to get us hooked. I'm sure you can remember a time when you spent hours binge watching videos, scrolling through Facebook, or watching Netflix?
Remember how you felt after you finally turned off the screen? Ah yes, the all familiar "icky" gross feeling. Like I can't BELIEVE I just did that (we've all been there, don't worry).
The worst part of all this stimulation is it makes anything else (like the goal you're procrastinating on) seem reaaaally boring.
There's no way you could read a book, or do work after a long binge session. The only thing you want to do is to turn on a screen and keep watching.
Now imagine if you were like this all day, every day.? You'd get nothing done!

Nowadays we're attached to our devices at the hip! Our brains are constantly being overloaded with dopamine - and all this stimulation is another reason why it's harder than ever to eliminate procrastination from our lives.

All the distractions we're bombarded with these days are turning us into serial consumers.
We're so used to the comfort of consuming other people's work, that it interferes with our ability to take action in our lives.
Anything significant that you want requires that YOU become the creator. It requires that YOU become the one producing things in the world, rather than just consuming other peoples work.

However, doing these things usually means we have to accept being uncomfortable. And honestly... deep down, this is the real reason why most people procrastinate:
It's scary to take the leap. It's easier to just stay comfortable in the role of consumer.
And I get it, I've been there myself. But one thing I've learned from working with hundreds of entrepreneurs is that everyone has this fear. The difference is, that some people learn how to deal with procrastination when it rears it's ugly head.

Flipping Procrastination on it's Head
What I've learned from watching successful entrepreneurs (and people in general) is that not only do they not struggle with procrastination, but they use it to their advantage.
Remember that vicious cycle I told you about earlier? How the more you procrastinate, the guiltier you feel, which makes you procrastinate even more?
